Under £1,000: The Swiss-Movement Band

Raise the ceiling to £1,000 and the catalogue changes character. Swiss-movement builds average £945 across our range, so this band comfortably covers most of them — the tier where the movement inside replicates the genuine calibre rather than merely keeping its time. An average is only an average, of course: plenty of Swiss-movement builds sit under the line, a few sit above it, but a £1,000 ceiling captures most of what we list.

What the Extra £500 Buys

Our Japanese-movement builds average £452; the Swiss-movement average of £945 is a measured 109% premium. Nearly all of that extra spend goes to one place: the movement. It buys a calibre whose bridges, rotor and decoration are laid out to mirror the genuine movement through an exhibition caseback; a slimmer construction that lets the case be built to genuine thickness rather than a fraction over; and, on many models, the small behaviours a knowing eye checks — the run of the seconds hand, the feel of the crown through its setting positions.

Where the Money Does Not Go

Not to the exterior. The case, dial, bezel and bracelet are the same factory components fitted to the sub-£500 Japanese-movement builds. That is the whole 109% premium in a sentence: the outside is shared; the inside is not.

You pay for What changes
Movement architecture Bridges, rotor and finish styled after the genuine calibre
Case thickness A slimmer movement lets the case match genuine spec
Handling details Crown feel and hand behaviour closer to the original
Exterior parts Nothing — shared with the Japanese-movement tier

How to Decide

The caseback rule serves well. If the model has an exhibition back, or the watch will be examined closely, the Swiss movement is the difference between passing a glance and passing a stare — and under £1,000 it is within reach on most builds. If the caseback is closed and the watch is a daily companion, the premium buys accuracy of detail you may never look at, and the Japanese tier is the shrewder spend. Either way, the exterior on your wrist is identical — the decision is entirely about what happens when the watch comes off it.
